Sumi Loundon Kim – Mindful Parenting, November 8, 2014 Register

10:00am to 12:00noon

Many of sense that we may be adequate but not necessarily good parents.  We may try time and again to be more patient, not yell so much, spend more time with our kids, not be so distracted and stressed out, model kindness and wise choices–only to find it incredibly hard to change our habits.  Meditation and mindfulness are skills that can assist the change we wish to see in ourselves.  This two-hour workshop introduces the basics of meditation and mindfulness as practices to develop our parenting.  No experience necessary; beginners welcome.

SumiRev. Sumi Loundon Kim is the Buddhist chaplain at Duke University and the minister for the Buddhist Families of Durham.  Following a master’s in Buddhist studies from Harvard Divinity School, she was the associate director for the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies.  She has published two books, Blue Jean Buddha (2001) and The Buddha’s Apprentices (2005), and is presently working on a third book, a grant-funded Buddhist meditation curriculum for adults and children.  Sumi and her husband, a native of Korea and assistant professor at Duke, have two medium-young children and live in Durham, NC.

Fee:  *$50/$40/$30 with $15 for additional parent from same family.
PLEASE NOTE: Online registrations are subject to closing 24 hours prior to event.

Sumi Loundon Kim – Mindfulness for Teenagers, November 8, 2014 Register

2:00 to 4:00pm

Many who learn meditation as adults say they wished they had learned it when they were children.  Well, it’s not too late–here’s your chance.  Meditation is about both the big stuff–self-knowledge, reflecting on life, and discovering meaning and purpose–as well as the everyday, such as reducing stress, supporting friendships, and enjoying the present moment.  This two-hour workshop will help you get started with developing a skill as essential to a life well-lived as learning to drive a car.
