In-Praise-of-Dependent-Origination-by-Je-Tsongkhapa**IMPORTANT UPDATE**

As some of you know Anne recently spent time with our Guiding Teacher Ad.z.om Rinpoche, and as a very special part of our Open House, we will be sharing a video that he recorded!  Communications such as this from Rinpoche are rare and treasured, and we are delighted to be able to share it with all of you.

Sunday, August 24 will be a special day at Dawn Mountain.  We will mark the end of summer and beginning of a new school year with a free guided introduction to meditation from 11:00am to 12:00noon with our founders, Anne and Harvey and the first installment of our six-week program for children ages 9-12, Mindful Discovery.  After meditation we’ll serve a light lunch and share information about all of our plans and programs for the fall, including volunteer opportunities through Dawn Mountain’s Path of Service.

Join us to learn more about how you and your family can be involved in the positive growth and flourishing of Dawn Mountain for the benefit of all beings!

Mindful Discovery – a course at Dawn Mountain for children ages 9-12 Register

DSCN3447Dawn Mountain is pleased to offer, for the first time, a course in mindfulness for upper elementary aged children.  Led by certified Mindfulness for Children instructor Simone Woodage, the coordinator of Dawn Mountain’s offerings for young people, Mindful Discovery will encourage participants age 9 through 12 to discover the nature of their own minds.  Students will explore brain science, mindfulness exercises and creative writing projects designed to expand their awareness of their own capacity to pay attention.  While children are in class, we encourage parents to attend our regular Sunday morning meditations.  The program runs six weeks, August 24 – September 28, and space is limited.

For more information, please call Jerri at Dawn Mountain at 713-630-0354.

May all beings always have happiness and its causes,
May all beings always be free of pain and its causes,
May all beings always be pain free and live happily,
May all beings never cling to those close nor hate those far.

Going about our daily business, we tend to think of ourselves as quite finite.  We see that we often run out of steam, out of patience, out of caring for others or even ourselves.  Yet, we sense our capacity for something much larger.

Practice with the four boundless states invites us to explore that capacity, and whatever obstructs us from it.  This retreat teaches crucial steps for uncovering the boundless qualities within–equanimity, loving kindness, compassion, and delight.  We give special attention to Longchenpa’s and Jigme Lingpa’s unique orientation to recognizing these steps as a portal to wisdom.

These teachings are important for everyone.  Everyone is welcome.  There will be separate tracks for the different levels, in addition to whole-group teachings.  For long-term students, this retreat integrates earlier retreat teachings on the Element Practice and Six Realms; for other ongoing students, it provides a bridge to those teachings.

There will be an opportunity to offer dana to the teachers as part of the closing ceremony.

Fee:  $200-Sustaining/$175-Supporting/$150-Base Level*
Members receive a 20% discount off your selected level.
*Dawn Mountain now charges for most retreats and programs on a sliding scale, recognizing the wide variation in individuals’ fiscal capabilities.  Those with greater ability are encouraged to contribute at the higher levels, helping to support and extend Dawn Mountain’s teachings.  As always, no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Call Jerri at 713-630-0354 to discuss your personal situation.

Join us at Dawn Mountain to explore the benefits of mindfulness practice for busy parents.  In our sometimes frantic efforts to provide children with the right guidance and right examples we can end up frustrated, confused and finally exhausted.  Simple mindfulness techniques combined with reflective practice can help!  This course will draw from the book The Conscious Parent:  Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children by Dr. Shefali Tsabary, and a copy is included with your registration.  There’s no need to read in advance as we will consider different sections each week in the context of our own parenting experiences.

EMBODIED LOVE AND COMPASSION:  Core Tibetan Trainings for an Unbounded Heart

First and Third Tuesdays
Sept 16-Dec 2, 2014
7:00-9:00 pm
Available Live and via Broadcast

Anne and Harvey offer guided meditations followed by teachings distilled from the Mahayana Literature, its Tibetan Commentaries, and in particular those by Longchenpa and Jigme Lingpa, to support growth of an unbounded heart.  Each segment illuminates one aspect of embodied presence and one of the four unbounded states–equanimity, love, compassion, and joy.

Going deep within the body helps open constrictions at the kinesthetic level, making possible more relaxation at the emotional level, even as we explore the terrible poignance of our precious and fragile existence.  This prepares us to touch directly into Longchenpa’s amazing teaching on the four boundless states and their intrinsic connection to wisdom itself.  Eventually, our experience shows us that everything is either love or a distortion of it, so that even our most bounded states can become a river to the ocean of compassion and wisdom.

These are core principles and pivotal practices for cultivation of an open heart to family, friends and far beyond, the core motivation of all spiritual development.  The sequence is thus both an introduction to meditation and a Buddhist perspective for newcomers, and a textured exploration of the depth (beyond ordinary mind) in love and compassion for longer term students.

Fee: $85/series, $15/individual class – free to members Classes will meet from 7:00-9:00 pm on Sept 16th, Oct 7th & 21st, Nov 4th & 18th and Dec 2nd. Please note:  Individual classes are not available via broadcast
